Shantiniketan is a small town near Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, India. It is known for the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. As Rabindranath Tagore wrote many of his literary classics here, Santiniketan is also a tourist attraction, and his house is a historic place. Shantiniketan was formerly known as Bhubandanga (named after Bhuban Sinha). This area was presented to the Tagore family from the Sinha family (house of Sir Satyendra Prasanno Sinha). Rabindranath's father, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, recognized it as very peaceful and named it Santiniketan. This means the residence of Shanti (Nicker). After receiving the Nobel Prize (1913), the school was expanded to university in 1921. By 1951, it became one of the Chuo universities in India. Many of the world's most famous teachers, including C. F. Andrews, are related to it. Shantiniketan is also home to Amartya Sen, who won the 1998 Nobel economics award.
