Tabriz is the website of Iran's 14 most famous universities and higher education institutions. Founded in 1947, Tabriz University is the most prestigious university in north-western Iran. Tabriz University is also regarded as one of five mother schools in the country, and it is a regional science center in this area. In addition to Tabriz University, there are other public universities that operate in this city and its surroundings. The Ministry of Higher Education, which oversees the administration of all higher education institutions in Iran, was founded in 1967. Education in Iran is concentrated, it is divided into K - 12 education and higher education. As of September 2015, 93% of Iranian adults had a high literacy rate. In 2008, 85% of Iranian adults had a high literacy rate, far exceeding the regional average of 62%. The proportion of young people (15-24 years old) increased to 97% without gender differences. By 2007, the Iranian student labor force participation rate was 10.2%, one of the highest proportions in the world.
