High School Dropout, Graduation, and Completion Rates: Better Data, Better Measures, Better Decisions (2011)

By the summer of 2003 (n = 21, 203). According to their research, a ninth grade who is on track at the end of a first grader is five times more likely to graduate from a first grader. Of the on-track students, 82% graduated from high school in 4 years, while extra-curricular students only gained 22% on time. The graduation rate of online students after five years is 85%, and the graduation rate of extracurricular students is 28%. Like Balfanz, Allensworth and Easton discovered that the performance of the course is related to graduation rather than standardized performance testing. Their results show that in the test score of the results of elementary school 8th graders, the course index is almost eight times more predictive of graduation. In their sample, 46% of the test score was the lowest quartile of the freshman who entered by the end of the year, 71% of the test scores were low, but graduated on time. Also, as of the end of this year, almost 25% of the top graduates with performance test scores are out of the usual truck, only 38% of freshmen who graduated from high school on a regular basis.

Researchers also studied the relationship between strict graduation and background factors including race / ethnicity, gender, economic status, parental education, and elementary school results. They found that there is a correlation between the ratio on the truck and the characteristics of the background, but these factors did not determine graduation. Regardless of background characteristics, orbit indicators can predict student real-time graduation. Furthermore, considering the grades of the students' ninth grade, background factors did not significantly improve graduation expectations.

Orbit variables are easy to understand and easy to calculate, but one of the downsides is that it can not be calculated one year before the students graduate from college. In order to compensate for this shortcoming, researchers looked at the indicators available at the beginning of the first year of the university, such as the average grade (GPA), number of failures in the term, absences. All three variables are as predictive as orbital states and correctly predict the graduation status in 80% of the time. Again, once these variables are taken into consideration, the background features will not increase the prediction.

Among the variables examined, GPA is slightly superior to mere indicators of passing or failing due to the nature of its classification (ie, some students have very poor grades in their courses). Students who have completed a first year student at GPA for more than 5 years have a graduation rate of at least 86%. The graduation rate of students with a GPA of 5 or less at the university is much lower, 53% for students with GPA 5 and 28% for students with GPA less than 0.

This index uses a dropout rate, but other indicators (high school graduation rate such as punctuality and high school graduation rate) are also used for the measurement of education at the high school level. This metric (also called "state" dropout rate) is just one way to calculate the high school dropout rate. The dropout rate of 'Event' is the proportion of young people aged 15-24 who graduated from 10th grade to 12th grade in the past year.
