Broadly speaking, open heart surgery has two types. That is, off pump circulation and extracorporeal circulation. Another type is improvement of open heart surgery such as minimally invasive cardiac bypass or robotic assisted bypass surgery. Off pump surgery is technically more challenging and requires a functional heart to perform surgery. The cost of cardiac surgery varies from 6 lacs to 5 lacs, depending on the type of surgery, the main thoracic surgeon, hospital and other factors.

The surrounding surgery can save lives everyday. Cardiac surgery and heart transplantation can only be achieved through animal experiments. Today, in the United States alone, open heart surgery can save about 500,000 lives annually. These techniques are standard procedures for animal experiments for decades by scientists such as John Gibbon. The gibbon was one of the first people who used cat's famous Heartbridge technology in the late 1930's. In these early experiments, he tested various types of pumps and oxygenator. He developed an artificial lung based on a rotating hollow cylinder where blood is dripped. After the end of World War II, Gibbon and his colleagues began a number of experiments with dogs to test the effects of long-term passage of blood through the oxygenator. Later they completely broke heart and lung blood circulation. By attaching a fine filter to the circuit, Gibbon can overcome the problem of small thrombus formation
