Participants read an online review of women and sexual minorities and indicated whether they mark them as inappropriate. Another group of participants rated responses after disliked comments. Some comments were made by men, but others were written by women. Participants also responded to questionnaires asking about their ethical and moral identities, their political affiliation, and their age and gender.

In this survey, it is not confirmed that gender directly affects commentary on hatred, but the result shows that women are more morally concerned about fairness than men. Women also need to strengthen their efforts to keep others from hurting, thereby increasing the likelihood of hateful comments. "These findings support the idea that women place importance on fairness and avoid harming others," Wilhelm explained. "In the specific case of comments on women and sexual minorities, the hatred speech of female writers is regarded as a double deviation, and therefore more strictly sanctioned than the male hate speech."

Joeckel warns that online discussions and platform provider hosts should be sensitive to the impact of gender on online discussions and the possibility of flagging these comments
