Career: Within a few weeks as vice president, Harry Truman met little with President Roosevelt and did not receive explanation about the difficulties associated with the development of the atomic bomb and the collapse of the Soviet Union. Suddenly, when he became president on April 12, 1945, these and other wartime problems became Truman 's solution. He told reporters, "I think the moon, the stars and all the planets are on me."
