Harriet Quimby (May 11, 1875 - July 1, 1912) was an early American pilot and filmmaker. In 1911 she was awarded an American pilot certificate from the American Airlines Club and became the first woman to receive a US pilot license. In 1912, she became the first woman to fly around the British Strait. Quimby lived only until 37 years old, but she influenced the role of women in the aviation industry. She was born on May 11, 1875 in Acadia Town, Manistee County, Michigan. She became a journalist after the family moved to San Francisco, California in the early 20th century. She moved to Manhattan in New York in 1903 as a weekly drama critic at Leslie Pictorial She has published over 250 articles in 9 years.
