Published by Harper & Brothers in 1857 - now Harper - Collins - Harper's weekly picture covers politics, presidential elections, international news, cultural events and wars. At the peak of distribution between 1861 and 1865, it reached 200,000 users. According to Mr. Bright, the figure does not include thousands of people watching the weekly second hand, calling the post office, or sharing them with their neighbors. "When he began working at Harper, Homer became an experienced illustrator for mass media," said Keely Orgeman, assistant curator at the American Painting and Arts Sculpture Museum. "He is a freelancer, but I worked exclusively for this paper during the Civil War."

In 1868 Harper's Weekly's most visible image appeared on the top banner of the first page. And that is the second graphic project of Harper and the Brothers 'graphic'. The brief announcement of the newspaper as "civilization magazine", the image around the title conveys Harper's "civilization" vision: the symbol of the art, the history, geography and astronomy - the symbol of civilization - the bracket name tag and the central Katagata passed the torch. This central image suggests the concept of two possible newspapers; Harper's weekly can be used for both as a civilization's own decision and as a hand to tell the light of civilization as a designer.
