The Hampton Road area has been economically stable over the past several decades. Early in 2007, Norfolk had foreseen the necessity of solving traffic problems, but in 2007 the case study to solve the visibility problems of the Hampton Road Light Rail was started. Because there is a military presence, the defense expenditure occupies the economic industry in this area. More than 45% of the economic value of this region comes from defense costs. Between 2008 and 2010, the population of the Hampton Highway was about 67 million and the annual regional output was $ 81 billion.
The first Tide opened on August 19, 2011 is a 7.4-mile railway line from Fort Norfolk / EVMC to Newtown Road. Harbor Park, MacArthur Square and Norfolk State University's site are also included. Hampton Roads Transit is considering the possibility of future expansion such as extension of light rail to Norfolk naval base or Virginia beach
Tide is a 7.3 mile light railway that extends east from the west end of Norfolk city center through the city center and ends at the city line of Norfolk / Virginia Beach. This project, developed and built by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), is operated by Hampton Roads Transit (HRT). The rail transport plan through Norfolk's east and west corridors and Virginia beach started in 1986. Thanks to these efforts, a large investment survey was conducted in 1997 and a light railway extending from the center of Norfolk city to the east side of 18 miles in Virginia province was identified. Hampton Roads Transit, Hampton Roads Transportation Planning, and regional cities are considering extending the start line. Possible extensions extend north to the Norfolk Naval Base, east to the waterfront and resort of Virginia Beach, west to Portsmouth, and south to Chesapeake. The Peninsula Rapid Transit Project is exploring the feasibility of a light rail in Newport News. Trends on the peninsula include Downtown Newport News, Amtrak Passenger Railway Station in Newport News, Oyster Point, Newport News / Williamsburg International Airport. Extensions between Newport News Downtown and Hampton Downtown are also under consideration.
