Hertzsprung - Russell plot or H - R plot is a plot of stellar luminosity versus surface temperature. Most of the stars are located on the main line, extending from the high temperature high brightness to the low temperature low brightness obliquely from the H - R chart. The position of the star along the main sequence is determined by its quality. A high-quality star will emit more energy than a low-mass star of the main line and it will be hotter. The main sequence star gains energy from the fusion of protons and scorpions. About 90% of the stars are in the main line. Only about 10% of stars are white dwarfs, less than 1% are superstars or superstars.

The Hertzsprung - Russell or H - R plot is a plot of the absolute value of a star as a function of its surface temperature. In the HR diagram, various kinds of stars, such as main sequence star, red giant star and white dwarf star, are placed in clearly defined areas. This allows you to assign features to stars using maps. Cepheid variable stars are stars whose absolute magnitude or brightness periodically changes. Since we found that there is a linear relationship between the length of these periods and the absolute size of the stars, to estimate the absolute size of the given star we measure the time between the maximum values of the brightness only. Then you can calculate the distance to the star using the inverse square law of intensity. This is one of the best ways for astronomers to find distant stars and the galaxies where they live.

The H - R plot plots the absolute values of many stars as a function of their spectral classes (this is essentially the same as their surface temperature). Such a graph shows all main sequence stars in a diagonal pattern, the heaviest ones are in the upper left corner of the graph, and the small stars are in the lower right corner of the graph. The red giant is drawn above and to the right of the main sequence and the white dwarf is near the middle and bottom of the main sequence diagram. For explanation of the H - R diagram, see Figure 18.11 in the textbook.
