H-15. The History of the Book in America: A Survey from Colonial to Modern

Investigation of the role of the book in American society and culture from the colonial period to the beginning of the 21st century. In this course, we will first learn about trading at the very beginning of the Atlantic, early stages of local binding in the US, and places of American colonial books. Then the focus shifts to the establishment of trade of the expanding American citizen book in the industrial era. Topics to investigate include industrialization and mechanization of books, how to sell and distribute books, and reading patterns in the United States. Finally, we will introduce book clubs and popular trade paper bags, alternative formats and publications of opposite formats, long-term discussions on the future of books, publications, reading, etc. on the development of the twentieth century and the present I will discuss it.

This course covers the broad interest of books on American history, but rarely has received formal training or contact with subjects.
