We all know how people get frustrated when they are not listening to what we say. Unfortunately, having mental health problems may make it difficult for others to seriously consider your opinion and thoughts. This may be very difficult to deal with, especially if you need to communicate regularly with health and social care professionals. You may find that they do not always give you all the opportunities and choices you desire or you can participate fully in decisions about your care.

Advocacy means that you express your opinion and desires and receive support from others to help you protect your rights. People who help you like this are called your supporters.

The role of the advocate depends on your situation and the support you want. But they are there to support your choice

Supporting support is often particularly useful in meetings when you may not be confident of expressing yourself. They can:

It helps to keep you safe during the meeting. For example, if you feel that the meeting is uncomfortable, counsel can take a break until you can continue.
