In the highly regarded novel "The Earth", Pearl S. Buck depicts the trials and sufferings of Wang Long and his family, an inconspicuous farmer. The novel started on the day when Wang Dragon married a woman he bought from Houda's house. He is ashamed that he must buy his wife, as wealthy people are always arranging for marriage. His wife, O-Lan, is a very witty diligent woman, making life easier for Wang Long and his father. One day, O-Lan told Wang Long, pregnant, a few months later, Wang Long's joy, said he is a boy.
