Vets.gov solves the problem of VA with hundreds of websites. And veterans need to navigate and access with different user names and passwords to complete mission-critical tasks such as subscribing for health care, supplementing prescriptions, or tracking disability claims. The Vets.gov team has created a separate location for veterans to discover, apply, track, and manage their interests online. We design every step with the user, work with full-time civil servants, and we are building the most common and necessary services first. As the functionality expands and traffic increases, our goal is to provide the best digital experience to people who serve our country.

So, how is Vets.gov constructed? Everything starts with our infrastructure; Vets.gov runs on AWS and is the first VA approved product produced by any commercial cloud provider. We operate Vets.gov in the GovCloud domain of AWS, an additional certified AWS region to meet government requirements. While some of the services found in more general business areas may be missing, it includes everything necessary to implement modern AWS infrastructure workflow. Vets.gov has a pipeline of ongoing testing and deployment built using Jenkins and GitHub. All pull requests for GitHub will allow Jenkins to run the test job and report its status to GitHub to allow or block merging to the master. Deployment is automated and integrated into our main branch, Jenkins runs every day and is deployed to production environment. Writing the code in the production environment everyday means that the user can fix the error faster so developers can see the impact of their work more quickly.

In fact, software narratives built in a more typical way within the government are rarely shared, but they are an important reminder of the wonderful work done on the ground everyday. This is the story of the website, Vets.gov, built from scratch in the (most) modern way. There is no discussion on how to build software. You should shock the people who make a living from the product (in fact, we say that it is too boring to release a colleague this blog). But the reason for writing believes that all of these are not expecting engineers to find in the largest private bureaucracy offered by the US government.
