GENDER ROLES IN LITERATURE

I believe that boys of our culture today will nurture their identity, especially in the work world, and apart from families, friends and families, through the hero's individualism and competition. On the other hand, girls acquire identity in the indoor world of love and care, through connections, collaboration, self-sacrifice, family, and community. The view that the roles of men and women are different can be seen in children's literature. Treasure island and secret garden are two novels. And it is a complete depiction of the story style of the book of "boys and girls".

Treasure Island is a book that many people thought of when considering books specially written for young boys. Treasure Island is a magnificent story seeking excitement and adventure. Stevenson's hero is a little boy, Jim. And he left for his mother and took a trip through the sea. Pirates accompanied by sea fear, sword fighting, bloody killing. These are usually what boys are interested in. Stevenson also followed the literary model described by Perry Nodelman in the fun of children's literature in his book. He explained many novels written by men according to the pattern of the story line. "There is a unified action that will soon end after reaching the climax" (Nodelman 124). On the other side, secret garden is written for girls. The hero of the secret garden is a young orphan named Mary. The point of the story is that Mary looks for friends, becomes a better person, and the last family gathers. Frances Burnett seems to be following two literary models described by Nodleman. First of all, she seems to be writing more about domestic events than risk. The garden is Mary 's adventure, but planting, weeding and care in the garden are a lot of ties related to women. Another literary model she followed was how to place the plot. Nodelman explains a plot of a novel written by a woman.
