The pulse modulated fuel supply system changes the fuel pressure by controlling the fuel pump speed thereby eliminating the need for a fuel pressure regulator. In pulse modulation systems, PCM monitors the fuel pressure using a fuel pressure sensor attached to the fuel line. The pulse modulation system also requires a professional grade scan tool to acquire the diagnostic trouble codes and instruct the fuel pump to generate different pulse rates to test the system. In order to help mechanics quickly diagnose problems with common fuel supply systems, car manufacturers have made some very sophisticated on-board diagnostic systems on their PCM. Scanning tools are needed to diagnose the latest fuel supply problems because the PCM compares their electrical output with the electrical outputs of at least two other sensors or by opening circuits, short circuits and ground This is because it has the ability to detect defect sensors by detecting sensor circuits. Finally, the PCM continually monitors the performance of the fuel delivery system by monitoring the oxygen sensor voltage.

Today's fuel supply system has various variations such as traditional pulse modulation and direct injection. Each variant has a specific component and test problem. When the ignition switch is turned on, the fuel pump starts for a few seconds and the fuel injector starts. While cranking, the fuel pump starts again but stops when the ignition key is released. When the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor indicates to the PCM that the engine is running, the PCM keeps operating the fuel pump relay without input of the ignition switch.
