Disc brakes or disc brakes are devices used to slow or stop the rotation of wheels. For mountain bikes, tandem bicycles, and sideways bicycles, the disc brake is more common than other types of bicycles because of the increased power, weight and complexity. In the case of manual braking, a force is applied to the brake lever attached to the handlebar and transmitted to the friction pad via the Bowden cable or hydraulic line, applying pressure to the brake surface causing friction, thereby slowing down the bicycle . Until it is popularized in North America in the 1960's, you can operate the rear hub brake manually or pedal like a rear roller coaster brake.
