In Greek, this term can be used for both men and women, but in English, the same woman is called a nun. The monk practices asceticism. They live alone or live with other monks who share the same ideals. Monks can be found in various religions, the most common are Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Jainism and Taoism.

A monk living alone is often called a hermit, and sometimes lives with other priests. A nun who lives together will do this at a monastery

Chastity: Buddhists can not have sexual relationships or sexual relations, can not start family or get married.

Static: The monk can not move far away except where necessary. Sometimes this means that the monks must be hidden, which means that they must not leave the monaster (especially during the Walta period). Sometimes they can be allowed to leave, but they can not go so far

Responsibility: The monk must do something everyday. For example, a monk must pray or meditate and have to do some work.
