Frank Norris’s Novel McTeague

Greed is defined as a strong, selfish desire for wealth and power of food. In Frank Norris' McTerger novel, the essence of greed is clear throughout the work. Many characters such as McTeague, Trina, Zerkow and others show that they have a lot of desires in their lives. We see these greedy situations happen with money, love, ... and so on. Frank Norris' novel "McTigg" explores the decline of society at the beginning of the 20th century. Norris explores the theme of greed and naturalism and reveals the dark side of the human mind, "It is a place where anything is possible, truth is more strange than the novel" (McElrath, Jr. 447). The most troubling thing is that Norris's way of drawing McGregor with shocking details is only his core barbarian. Norris explores greedy and barbaric animalism hidden inside McTeeg.

In 1924, Erich von Stroheim tried to adapt Frank Norris's novel "McTeague" with his animation "Greed". The movie lasted nine and a half hours. In the studio, it was cut for 4 hours, and was cut again in about 2 hours again without input of Stroheim. As a result, basically an incoherent movie will be created. Since then, there are few directors trying to incorporate all of the novel in the movies. Therefore, omitting is almost indispensable. In some cases, inserting a scene or creating a character is done by remodeling the movie. This is especially true if the novel is part of a literary legend. Events or quotes from late or early novels are inserted into the movies. Furthermore, it is controversial whether movie makers invent new characters or create stories that do not exist at all in original materials. Given the anticipated movie viewers, writers, directors, or movie studios may wish to increase their role time or invent new roles.
