Andragogy is a term used for adult learners. In other words, the age group counted as an adult learner is in twenties, that is, it is over 26 years old. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (nces.ed.gov), an estimated 3,759 students aged 35 and above received higher education in 2012. Parents can learn from the phrase "Improving life is never too late". This will help adults consider returning to school. I decided to focus on my parents who returned to school. Because they do not focus on themselves, they tend to keep their lives aside for their families.

Knowles (1980) touched the terminology of Yugoslavian adult educators in the mid - 1960 's. His andrandogy definition is parallel to pedagogy. Andragogy is based on Greek aner, the word stem means "man, not man" or adult, "agogus" means "leader". Knowles defines this term as "art and science to help adults learn" and emphasizes the difference between adult and child education (Davenport, 1987). According to Knowles (1980), the purpose of adult education should be self-actualization, therefore the learning process should include the emotional, psychological, and intellectual existence as a whole. The mission of adult educators is to support adults to demonstrate their full potential. It is a teaching method for scholars to achieve this goal. In Knowles' view, teachers are promoters to help adults become independent learners (Darkenwald & Merriam, 1982)

Knowles is a highly influential person in adult education and a supporter of academic independent learning and informal adult education. Here, I review his life and achievements and evaluate his contribution. Malcolm Shepherd Knowles (1913-1997) was a key figure in American adult education in the second half of the 20th century. In the 1950s he served as secretary general of the American Adult Education Society. He wrote the first major report on the history of informal adult education and adult education in the United States. In addition, Malcolm Knowles tried to develop its own conceptual foundation for adult education and learning through the concept of andrandogy, which has been widely discussed and used. He also writes popular works on independent production and team work (with his wife Fulda)
