The number of members is decreasing throughout the United States. In 1954, union staff reached a peak of 34.7%, but I remembered that it has continued decreasing since then. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, total domestic employment increased by 4 million, but the total number of labor union members in 2012 declined by 400 thousand to 143 thousand (Greenhouse, 2013). The proportion of labor union workers in 2011 was 11.8%, which declined to 11.3% in 2012. This is the lowest number of members since 1916.
