Exchange rate is defined as the exchange rate of currencies expressed in other currencies.

Exchange rate management: The government can intervene in the foreign exchange market by selling the currency on the foreign exchange market to lower the currency value. Doing so improves the trade balance because import costs increase and export costs go down. However, such policies are effective only in the short term. In the long run this leads to a rise in the inflation rate of the country, which increases the actual export cost and the relative price of imports falls.
