Jean and Finney are opposite in character but they are best friends in Devon. Jean's quiet, introverted and intelligent personality is Finnie 's outgoing and carefree athletic ability. During his tenure at Devon, Jean and Finney experienced intense blood relations. During Gene 's "Gypsy Summer" in 1942, Finney' s idea was to create a "Summer Conference Super Suicide Association", Gene and himself as charter member. Finney created an enlightenment ceremony that allowed members to jump into the Devon River from a large and expensive tree.

In the whole novel, Jean's anxiety indirectly hurt Finney's life, so the relationship between Jean and Finney has changed. Initially, Jean and Finney began their summer gatherings at Devon and became best friends. Jean is fascinated, attracted to everything that Finney is doing, reluctantly reluctantly turning his friends unstable and unforgettable. However, as he began to think that Finney was more like a competitor than a friend, the instability of the gene showed a slap in Finney. Jean explained thoroughly the motivation and feelings that Finney had to him through his idea.

Although it is a friend, Gene and Finny are very different. Jean is an excellent student, but Finney is an excellent athlete, perhaps the best athlete at Devon. Genes tend to be quiet and want to learn, and Finney has vibrant, outgoing and bold personality. Finney is also very smart and always adapts to any situation. Fanny likes teachers and students very much, not surprising. Jean absolutely worships him and thinks he is a hero; the gene also plediates and hates him. As he spends too much time with Finny, Gene's performance was low. He is convinced that Finney deliberately tried to make him a bad student.
