Yemen has been devastated by the civil war for more than two years. More than 3 million people have escaped armed conflict. There are 18.8 million people (about 70% of the population) staying in conflict areas. Their situation is becoming increasingly desperate
Drinking water is scarce, food is scarce, and the prices of the remaining small foods are rising everyday. One million people are threatened by famine, and now 8 million people depend on relocation benefits. Especially in Sa'ada, Al Hudaydah, Taizz, Al Dhale'e, Al Jawf area, many people are hungry. Welthungerhilfe and its Alliance 2015 partner ACTED supports the victim through a cash transfer program
Especially special support of 350 thousand euros is done in disaster area. This fund is for food security projects. In addition, some people are collecting cash. This allows people to quickly and easily purchase food and very necessary items. Supporting approximately 11,500 people like this
ACTED has had excellent experience with Yemen's cash transfer program. Cash aid distributed in Yemen often provides effective and sustainable aid rather than distributing goods. This ensures flexibility and freedom of decision making even in emergency situations. On the other hand, standardized aid packages do not necessarily meet the needs of all beneficiaries.
In 2016, we also continued to provide cash to people to purchase food and meet other needs, taking into account the market operation and the general situation. Offering cash is a powerful and flexible tool to fight hunger. Provide people with more choices and more diverse meals while stimulating the regional economy. In Turkey, WFP and Turkish Red Crescent Company launched an emergency social safety network (ESSN). This is a project to provide electronic cash cards to vulnerable refugees. That amount is billed directly to the card monthly, allowing families to purchase food, medicine, warm clothes as needed and pay rent and tuition fees. By December, more than 500,000 people registered in the program.
The World Food Program is the world's largest humanitarian organization fighting global starvation, providing food aid in emergency situations and working with local communities to improve nutrition and resilience. Due to the continuing conflict, more than half of WFP's budget is spent on Middle East and Arab countries. WFP provides food and cash aid to millions of people in Yemen, Syria and Iraq and is supporting the rebuilding of the lives of Syrian refugees in neighboring countries
