About Groyne ------------ I went to Sheringham on 17th July 2002 and conducted a field survey for my geography course. I went to Sheringham on the North Norfolk Coast. The reference of the grid is 160436. [IMAGE] I went to Sheringham for various reasons and chose it elsewhere in the area. The main reason is that Sheringham has an ideal case. In other words, the seafloor coastline may be protected or unprotected. This is totally contrasting.

Swells are used to slow down the process of drifting along the coastline. Because breakwaters are built perpendicular to the coast, we capture sediments carried by the sea. Construction of breakwater helps to enlarge the size of the beach and is thus better protected against coastal erosion. Groynes is designed according to the strength and direction of long-distance drift of the coastline. A well-designed breakwater can hinder further supply of earth and sand along the coast. This led to the design of a new semipermeable spur dam that allows some sediment to travel along the coast past spurs.

Figure 5 shows a more general impervious pawl design. Most breakwaters are made of tropical hardwood to resist erosion processes and marine animals and may try to break into breakwaters. Breakwaters are supported by wood and steel piles to ensure that they can withstand the forces of the ocean. Retaining walls are used for sea walls. They are often used under a cliff and there is a danger of collapse. Revetment works as a sloping barrier to the sea, reflecting and absorbing energy. The protection of wood is far cheaper than the revetment and it costs 1,200 pounds per meter, so it is a real alternative. But they are easy to see rapid deterioration on the Weybourne cliffs.

Located on the east coast of the UK, the Holderness coastline is located north of the mouth of Humber River, one of Europe's most eroding coastlines due to soft clay cliffs and powerful waves. Groynes and other artificial controls speed up the process along the coastline as coastal drift slows the coast and exposes them more. The white cliffs of Dover are also affected. Ricasoli Fort is a historic 17th century fortress in Malta and is threatened by coastal erosion. A small part of one fortress wall was destroyed because the land beneath it was eroded and there were cracks in other walls.
