People believed for a long time that the environment they eat is an important element of consumer behavior. The fast food restaurant has bright lights, exciting colors and fast music so that people eat fast, but a sophisticated restaurant, dim light and more relaxed music make people eat slowly. People have also decided that more people eat, the more people eat. In this experiment I would like to investigate whether changing the atmosphere of the fast food restaurant will change consumption of food consumers. Suppose that people stay long in a gourmet atmosphere, so they will consume more calories than their fast food counterparts.
To validate our hypothesis, we took over the Hardee fast food restaurant in Champaign, Illinois and divided it into two dining areas. One area does not change, such as bright lighting, color, noisy music. Add indirect lighting, plants, paintings, white tablecloths and soft jazz music as a background and turn another area into a sophisticated dining environment. 62 lunch break customers were randomly assigned to one of the two areas. Friends measure the time that participants eat. The amount of calories burned is calculated by weighing the plate after consumption. The participants also filled in the survey after the experiment and showed they enjoyed the meal and meal experience.
Overall, the number of calories initially ordered by customers is the same regardless of the atmosphere of the meal. Interestingly, the results show that customers in the gourmet environment ate 7% of their time, but ate less than 95% of the fast food's 6%. In addition, people in a gourmet atmosphere not only have a low chance of ordering extra food, but when ordering, they reduce calories by 14% compared to participants in fast food atmosphere. Participants with sophisticated dietary conditions also rated food as a food that exceeds the status of fast food
This research will affect fast food restaurants and consumers! If a fast food restaurant wants consumers to enjoy more of their food, they should reduce lighting and music to create a more relaxing atmosphere. People who do not want to eat too much, please make meals slow.
