HIST 0244. Understanding the Middle East: From the 19th century to the present. This course introduces the history of the modern Middle East from the mid-19th century to the present. Reading and themes are arranged in chronological order, highlighting important events and turning points in the political and economic history of the region. The purpose of this course is to understand how the Middle East is shaped by past events. HIST 0247 Civilization, Empire, Nationality: History of competition in the Middle East. "Middle East" is a recent invention. About 100 years ago there were few provinces that are currently producing maps of this area. In this course we will examine how historians (and others) use the concepts of civilization, empire, and nation to build a competitive story about major regions from Islam to the present .
Regarding the Middle East, there are two common mistakes. The first is to confuse the Arab world with the Middle East. The Middle East is a diverse region with multiple languages and cultures. Most inhabitants of the area speak Arabic, but some countries in the Middle East, including Turkey, Iran and Israel are not the majority of Arabic. Of course, there are minority communities in majority Arab countries as well, Arabic is not their mother tongue including Kurdish, Berber and many other groups. At the same time, many Arabic speaking users live in Sudan to the United States, the majority other than Arabs. There are many duplications, but the Middle East and the Arab world are not the same thing!
