Discussion paper was discussed at the February 2007 meeting. This is one of a series of papers designed to help the Council decide the choice of organ procurement, transplantation and distribution policies. Each paper in this series is intended to facilitate the discussion of the Board of Directors and does not represent the official views of the Board of Directors or the US Government. As of January 18, 2007, there were 94,664 Americans registered on the OPTN port list. It is the largest group of patients who need kidney, accounting for about two-thirds of the list. According to most predictions, that number can increase significantly in the coming decades. As Dr. Neil Powe explained to the Board at the June 2006 meeting, only the famous "Iceberg" of chronic kidney disease was seen.
