Biology is a natural science that studies life and living things, including physical structure, chemical process, intermolecular interaction, physiological mechanism, development and evolution. Despite the complexity of science, there are still some unified concepts that combine them into a single coherent area. Biology believes that cells are the basic unit of life, genes are the basic unit of heredity, evolution is the engine driving the creation and extinction of species. A living organism is an open system that survives by converting energy and reducing their local entropy to maintain a stable and important state defined as homeostasis.

Evolution can be seen as a two-step process.
