However, in the 1850s, there were many incidents that caused the war to start more quickly than anticipated. The 1850 compromise between Henry Clay and Daniel Webers had a great impact on both the slave owner and the abolitionists. Today, New Mexico, Utah, and other new western lands can decide by themselves whether they are free or slave, depending on the sovereignty of the people.
