All the farms selected for this study were part of the sentinel pathogen-based surveillance program FoodNet Canada for sentinel pathogens and were identified as pig farms. The selection of these farms is based on the distance from Guelph University, including delivery to young producers and delivery to completion. Each farm keeps up to 2,500 pigs indoors. In addition to pigs, 100 to 110 cattle on one farm, about 100 chickens on another farm, breeding on farms, horses and ponies are raised. Only pork exudates were stored in the pits sampled in this study, poultry manure did not spread to farm fields. Three of the five farms did not inject pigs with antibiotics or antibiotics. Two other farms are given by injecting antibiotics to pigs
