In this story, Konora has never treated Charles in a selfish way. She is suffering from tuberculosis, and even after she left her, she still follows Charles through the North Pole to save his life. It surprised Charles and changed him from a greedy person to a more human person. It changed his perception of locals and changed how he handled other people. Finally, he came to take care of the conola as she was so sick that she could not take care of herself.
