What does the word 'family' mean to you? Our current society has many family definitions that transcend traditional maternal and child relationships. These changes to the contemporary family concept caused a big controversy. One of the changes is the rise of homosexuals and lesbian women who are currently growing their children, or are interested in becoming parents. In the United States, adoption of homosexual parents is resisted by law and society. Studies have shown, however, that there is no evidence that child development is adversely affected by homosexual parents; therefore, sexual orientation is not a just reason to deny adoption.
