Epithelial tissue spreads throughout the body. They form the cover of all the body surfaces, the main body of the glands, the body cavity of the wire and the hollow organs. They have numerous functions including protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion and sensory acceptance.

Cells in epithelial tissue are densely packed with very few intercellular matrix. As the tissue forms a cover and lining, the cells have a free surface that is not in contact with other cells. On the other side of the free surface, the cells are attached to the underlying connective tissue via an acellular basement membrane. The shape of epithelial cells can be scaly, cuboidal or cylindrical and can be arranged in a single layer or multilayers.

Simple cuboid epithelium is found in glandular tissue and renal tubules. Simple columnar epithelial cells are located in the stomach and intestines. Pseudo-stratified columnar epithelial cells line a portion of the airway and a portion of the male reproductive tract. The transitional epithelium may expand or stretch. The glandular epithelium is used in particular for the production and secretion of substances

Epithelial tissue is derived from all three major embryonic layers. Epithelial tissue constituting the skin membrane originates from the ectoderm. The epithelial tissue that constitutes the majority of the mucosa is derived from the endoderm. The epithelial tissue that aligns blood vessels with the open space in the body is derived from mesoderm. Epithelial tissue that aligns blood vessels in the lymphatic system and cardiovascular system is called the endothelium and the epithelial tissue that forms the serosa of the true inner layer is particularly noteworthy that it is called mesothelium.
