Environmental and Social Sustainability

ESS (Environmental and Social Sustainability) incorporates and integrates precautionary environmental social principles and considerations into the decision-making process. As part of the United Nations' commitment to support the outcome of national sustainable development, United Nations organizations throughout the system are committed to internalizing the principles they represent. In 2012, members of the United Nations Environmental Management Group have developed a framework of the United Nations system to promote environmental and social sustainability. This framework provides a basic framework for integrating environmental and social sustainability measures into the UN's policies, plans and operations and provides recommendations on actions to be taken at individual agency levels and throughout the United Nations system provide.

In 2014 the EMG Consultative Process announced the "Provisional Guide to the UN System to Promote the Environmental and Social Sustainability Framework" in order to support and promote UN agencies to begin implementing the framework.
