The Zoo Aquarium Association (AZA), formerly the American Zoo Aquarium Association, originally the American Zoo Aquarium Association, a non-profit organization founded in 1924, is promoting North American zoos and aquariums in this area. Development protection, education, science and entertainment. AZA is headquartered in Silver Spring, Maryland, USA. In October 1924, the American Zoo Aquarium Association (AAZPA) was founded and a subsidiary of the American Park Management Academy (AIPE). In 1966, AAZPA became a specialized department of the newly established nationwide recreation and park association (absorbing NRPA, AIPE). In the autumn of 1971, the AAZPA members voted to become an independent association, and in January 1972 they established the secretariat at Oglebay Park Good Zoo in Wheeling, West Virginia and received the AAZPA.

Founded in 1972, the American Zoo Aquarium Association (AZA) is an organization that supports the development of protection, education, scientific research and entertainment by zoos and aquariums in North America. AZA promotes the protection of wildlife and habitats around the world by assuring that zoos meet certain criteria and supporting member organizations to disseminate information. AZA has developed a taxonomic advisory group (TAG) to identify the species that will most benefit from exclusive management plans. TAG reviews specific criteria (activities within the same taxonomic group such as dogs and cats) related to all species in the taxonomic group and evaluates which species should be recommended for the dedicated management plan. Through this program, zoos and aquariums can use limited space and abilities for seeds that are thought to require the most support.
