The impact of microfinance is recognized as an effective mechanism for poverty alleviation in rural areas and empowerment of women in developing countries. Sri Lanka is a developing economy with a diversified microfinance system and the Samurdi Project has the largest microfinance client there to serve rural areas. The majority of participants in the Samurdhi project are women. In this article I will explain how this program made rural women in Sri Lanka successful. A case study was held at Ihala Koswaththa village in the Kurunegara district of northwestern Sri Lanka. This research analyzes economic empowerment, improvement of welfare, social and political empowerment.
