Ellen Ochoa

Ellen Ochoa (May 10, 1958, Los Angeles, California), an American astronaut and administrator, was the first Hispanic woman to travel to space (1993). She later served as the director of the NASA Johnson Space Center (2013-18)

Ochoa studied electrical engineering at Master 's degree (1981) and Ph.D. (1985) from Stanford University. She is an expert on the development of optical systems and has worked as a research engineer at Sandia National Laboratory and NASA Ames Research Center. She helped create several patented systems and methods, including an optical system to detect repeating pattern defects and identify objects.
