Alan Ochoa was named NASA in 1990 and became an American astronaut in 1991. She served as a mission specialist with four space shuttle flights and served as payload commander in the last mission. With STS-56, Dr. Ochoa became the first Hispanic woman to travel in space. During this flight Dr. Ochoa applied her extensive robot training while manipulating the remote manipulator system (RMS) to deploy and capture Sparta satellites. She again used the RMS for the next task, STS-66, to recover the CRISTA-SPAS satellite at the end of the 8-day flight. When docked to the STS-96 International Space Station (ISS), Dr. Ochoa operated the third RMS with an 8 hour space walk. Her technical skill was successfully used at the International Space Station during STS-110. Dr. Ellen Ochoa is currently the eleventh director of the Johnson Space Center. She is the first Hispanic director of the Space Center and the second female director. Ellen Ochoa holds a bachelor's degree in physics from San Diego State University.
