When Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from Geneva Medical University in 1849, she became the first female doctor in the United States. When she applied for a UK medical registration, it made her the first modern female doctor in Europe. Elizabeth Blackwell was born in Bristol, England in 1821. She is one of nine children, and her father is a very prosperous sugar refinery. Her family emigrated to New York in 1832. Her family is very active in the New York abolition campaign. Her father's refinery did not prosper and the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1838.
