Eli Whitney (December 8, 1765 - January 8, 1825) is an American inventor known for inventing cotton gin. This is one of the important inventions of the industrial revolution and formed the south economy before the war. Whitney's invention made Highland short cotton a useful crop, which strengthened the economic base of slavery in the United States. His invention was influenced both socially and economically, but Whitney lost a lot of profit in a legal dispute over cottony patent infringement. Since then, he directed his attention to signing a contract with the government to make a fire rifle for the newly formed US military. He kept making weapons and invented until death in 1825.
