In the 4-acre El Paso Rose Garden, more than 1,500 varieties of rose bushes are exhibited. In April 1958, El Paso and the El Paso Rose Association planted the first 200 roses. The rose garden was opened to the public in May 1959. Originally 1.5 acres, the city of El Paso has expanded to the current size from 2005 to 2006. Garden-Kind® rose, miniature rose and rose family miniature plants have special places in the garden. Every year new roses are added and El Paso's adaptability to climate conditions is appreciated. Most of the garden bushes repeat lanterns and will continue to bloom until early winter
Since 2007, El Paso Master Gardeners have volunteered to participate in the contract between Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service and El Paso City and El Paso Rose Society at El Paso Rose Garden. Volunteers do trimming, heading, weeding, soaring stocks and other work to keep the garden beautiful. Volunteers will provide roses and other information to garden visitors and group tours during the peak season. They also support the El Paso Rose Association (915-751-3631) with the annual pruning demonstration every February.
Gardening master Rose garden committee coordinates volunteer activities with expanding gardening agent, rose association, and city. Gardening master volunteers take care of thousands of hours of roses every year in the garden and offer hours of public education
