Prior to 1995 theorists believed there were five consistent versions of the superstring theory (type I, type IIA, type IIB, and two versions of hybrid string theory). This understanding has changed when 1995, Edward Witten confirmed that the five theories are only cases of special restrictions called M-theory called 11-dimensional theory. Witten's speculation is based on the work of other physicists, including Ashoke Sen, Chris Hull, Paul Townsend, Michael Duff. At the string theory conference in 1995, Edward Witten has announced an amazing proposal. All five superstring theories are actually only different limits to a single theory in eleven space-time dimensions. The announcement of Witten combines all previous discoveries of S and T duality with the emergence of higher dimensional brains in string theory. In the months since Witten's announcement, hundreds of new articles supporting various parts of his proposal appeared on the Internet. Today, this series of work is called the second superstring revolution.
