Edward Witten's Work Led to a Revolution

In 1976, he received a Ph.D. in physics from David Gross, who received the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics. Prior to 1995 theorists believed there were five consistent versions of the superstring theory (type I, type IIA, type IIB, and two versions of hybrid string theory). This understanding has changed when 1995, Edward Witten confirmed that the five theories are only cases of special restrictions called M-theory called 11-dimensional theory. Witten's speculation is based on the work of other physicists, including Ashoke Sen, Chris Hull, Paul Townsend, Michael Duff. His presentation has caused a series of research activities and is now known as the second superstring revolution.

In the early 1980s Edward Witten has discovered that most of the quantum gravity theory can not be adapted to chiral fermions like neutrinos. This led him to cooperate with Luisarvares-Gaumé to study the anomalies that violated the conservation law of gravity theory, and concluded that the I string theory is contradictory. Green and Schwartz discovered the anomalies that Witten and Alvarez-Gaumé had missed. This limits the canonical group of I string theory to SO (32). In understanding this calculation, Edward Witten confirmed that string theory certainly is a consistent gravity theory, and he became a high-profile supporter. After Witten's leadership, hundreds of physicists began working in this field between 1984 and 1986. This is also called the first superstring revolution.

At the string theory conference in 1995, Edward Witten has announced an amazing proposal. All five superstring theories are actually only different limits to a single theory in eleven space-time dimensions. The announcement of Witten combines all previous discoveries of S and T duality with the emergence of higher dimensional brains in string theory. In the months since Witten's announcement, hundreds of new articles supporting various parts of his proposal appeared on the Internet.
