Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians

History of American Cherokee Indians White settlers faced difficulties when the United States expanded south in the early 19th century. There is no land base in Keetowah Cherokee. Each tribe of Cherokee, like a small country, has its own government, law, police, and services. However, the Cherokee Indians are also American citizens and must comply with American law.
