The artist used Jesus as a child to depict the artistic theme of the Virgin Mary called "Virgin Mary and Child". Because of the role of religious themes in the spiritual assistants of churches and other religious buildings, religious themes may occupy such a strong position in art history (Dunkerton 27).

In the early days, the early Renaissance happened in the early 15th century. Early Renaissance art was an Italian artist and influenced by sculptor Donatello and Italian painter Masaccio. (C pg 601) Donatello's artistic style and work represents an important aspect of the early Renaissance. Donatello's statue of David is his most famous art work and depicts a common theme of this era. David was the representative of heroes and became the main content of early Renaissance art. Heroes are a popular aspect of the humanitarian movement, often painted as a work of art during the early Renaissance. Donatello's early work also depicts the concept of youth, another general aspect of the humanist movement.

As early as the 13th century, Italians planted the seeds of the new era, Renaissance. The elements of the Middle Ages and Byzantine art have greatly contributed to the formation of Renaissance sculptures, but Italian artists were interested in the revival of classical art. ("Renaissance" means "play".) The relief sculpture of Nicolas Pisano (1220 - 1984) foresaw a new era. In the late thirteenth century Pisano carved a naked male statue in the church's pulpit. Pisano seems to try to reproduce the heroic image of classical art, but his work is still like a Byzantine or medieval sculpture. .

The Renaissance was popular in the UK during the late 15th century and continued until the early 17th century. Unlike the Italian Renaissance in the British Renaissance, the main art form in the UK was literature and music, not visual art. The towering person of the British Renaissance is William Shakespeare, the biggest writer in the UK and is widely known as the world's best playwright. Shakespeare wrote some of the best and most famous works ever. He is one of the most influential people in British literary circles and his play continues to play and adapt
