Dutch Settlement Of New York

The first Dutch settlement in the New York area appeared around 1613. British deprived New Holland colony from the Netherlands in 1664 and renamed it New York State after the brother of New York's brother Duke (later James II). In July 1673, the Dutch regained the colony during the Third Dutch-Netherlands War, but returned to the UK under the Westminster Convention in exchange for Suriname. The New Holland colony was founded in 1624 by the West India Company of the Netherlands and has grown to include all of New York and Long Island, Connecticut and New Jersey. A successful Dutch settlement in the colony grew up at the southern tip of Manhattan Island and was named New Amsterdam. In 1626 the Dutch governor Peter Mignette officially purchased Manhattan from a local tribe in order to legalize claims against the Netherlands New Amsterdam. According to legend, Manhattan Indian of Algonquin's language stock agreed to give up the island in exchange for accessories worth only $ 24. But since they did not understand European wealth and contractual customs, there was an immediate clash between the expanding Dutch settlements in Manhattan and New Amsterdam.
