Diego Bohorquez and colleagues at Duke University have found a neural circuit connecting the intestines and the brain. This pathway starts with a single synapse and can transmit signals from the intestine to the brain within 100 ms. This newly discovered pathway can be exploited by pathogens and will almost certainly lead to new treatments.
