Donatello the Sculptor

Donatodi Niccalódi Betto Bardi, also known as Donatello, is an Italian Renaissance artist and sculptor born in Florence, Italy in 1386. He can be said to be one of the best sculptors of the 15th century. His ability to express humans through art through immortality made him his own alliance. In Florence, Donatello was taught the basics of sculpture, and in his early days he was an apprentice by Lorenzo Ghiberti. Donatello creates stone, wood and bronze sculptures in creative ways and gives life to the raw materials he created.

Donatello collaborated with well-known sculptor of his era as well as famous architect Filippo Brunelleschi. According to Brunelleschi, Donatello visited Rome in the early 15th century to study the ancient monuments. Strangely, Filippo started with more silver and gold sculptors than the architect. In 1401, he took part in a famous design competition for the Bronze Gate of Baptistery in Florence, but of course he lost the competition for Lorenzo Giberti with the help of Donatello. After working with Lorenzo and Filippo, Donatello began his career as a sculptor.

Filippo Brunelleschi and his friend, the famous sculptor Donatello, visited Rome to study the ruins of ancient Rome, and began to try such meticulous efforts. Donatello and Brunelleschi continue to exert a huge impact on the art and architecture of the Renaissance. They are considered to be one of the founders of the Renaissance. Brunelleschi is widely believed to be the most creative and talented designer. He developed the Renaissance style, imitated and improved the classical shape. He also invented a linear outlook which was a feature of the Renaissance art that caused a revolution in paintings. Brunelleschi is considered the first modern engineer, planner and sole architectural supervisor. His main technical accomplishment is to build the dome of Florence Cathedral.

Donatello is considered to be the biggest sculptor of the early Renaissance. He paved the way to his successor in terms of technology and style, and painted the natural beauty as realistically as possible. Donatello's bronze David runs contrary to the medieval style and is an ideal example of the natural beauty of the Renaissance. In particular, David's sculpture is an epoch-making event in Western art. Believe it or not, Donatello's statue of David is the first independent figure known from ancient times.

By the beginning of the 15th century the Renaissance was going well. The sculptor Donatello made the statue of David, the first independent naked body from the classical era. Donatello clearly understood the overall anatomy of the character, so that young Bible heroes can be presented with ease and confidence. By the beginning of the sixteenth century another sculptor of Florence, a great painter and sculptor Michelangelo Buonarroti, made his David version almost superhuman and powerful.
