From rural fishing villages to internationally renowned cities, our society has definitely made great progress and achieved dramatic development. This is the reason behind the incredible success of education. According to the Singapore Bureau of Statistics, the general literacy rate (people over the age of 15 years) steadily rises from 68.9% in 1970 to 93.7% in 2002. Secondary staff or senior officials aged 15 and older had 12.0% since 1970 and 53.4% in 2002. With all these factors in mind, it is inappropriate to say that we have to learn what we have learned at school.
The Humanist Association understands that not all students in Singapore's schools will learn to evolve. Only students studying higher biology at high school can learn the basic concept of evolution. Some modules of local universities such as National University of Singapore and Nanda offer courses on evolution. In a newsletter, the professor asked all students to teach evolution. To promote public understanding of evolution the humanities society held public lectures on science and evolution through four separate Darwin's days from 2011 to 2014. In 2015 and 2016, the Humanist Association celebrated Darwin Day in the form of an excursion to the Botanical Gardens. As Singapore Zoo discipline, Singapore has a special place in the history of evolutionary biology. Alfred Russell Wallace, a naturalist who independently devised evolution, spent in Singapore during the Malay expedition.
Sir Sir Raffles Sir Thomas Stamford established the Singapore Institute (now known as Raffles University) to begin education in Singapore under British rule in 1823. Thereafter, there were three main types of schools in Singapore: schools of Murray School, Chinese, Tamil (together) and English schools. The UK provides Malay language schools for all students free of charge, but English is the main language and English schools are established by missionaries and they charge tuition fees. The Chinese and Tamil schools mainly teach their mother tongue. Especially the students of Chinese schools, especially the rise of Chinese nationalism, are particularly suitable for the development of China.
