As discipline of folklore studies it is not necessary to discuss whether discipline plays a role in society. There is room for discussion about kind, severity and appropriateness, but it certainly helps. This will be applied worldwide, including NATO and UN groups, to individual families. Family units educate their children about their expectations through demonstration and training, and provide training camps for near future community members. The method varies by family, culture, and location, but we all need to answer authority at some point.
In the field of folklore tradition, the myth refers to a story that occurred in the prehistoric era, including supernatural, sometimes humans. Myths may be about how the world was made (like the story of Dumbara) or about how Coyote steals water from a waterfall. Time may not work in myths, and the personality in myths may not be bound by ordinary rules. Myths are often about rules of cultural creation and management of the universe of nature. In contrast, legends usually occur at the edge of history, including human heroes, but have magic or abnormal abilities. For example, the story of Troy is an ancient Greek legend: it happened before the dark era, involving God and heroes capable of superhuman feat. Another legend example is the immigration legend from the American Indian community that tells you how to live in these lands.
There are many things that it is almost impossible to define folklore briefly. This is both the study of ethnologists and the name of the theme they studied. Yes, private folklore is folk songs and legends. It also includes quilts, boy scouts badges, enlightenment of high school marching bands, jokes, cheerlettes, nicknames, holiday foods, and so many other things you may or may not think about. Private lore exists in cities, suburbs, villages, families, working groups and dormitories. Folklore exists in various informal interactions regardless of verbal (oral and written), custom (behavior, ritual) or problem (physical object). It includes value, tradition, way of thinking, action. This is art. This is about how people and people learn. It helps us to understand who we are and how we create meaning in the world around us.
